@Xavier,

I use RSS to avoid email alerts, so something like that would be pretty cool. Most of the time, Twitter scrolls by and I don't care if I miss things. But to track conferences and other events, this would be a pretty cool tool.

@Marshall,

This post is somewhat basic, but unfortunately, most journalists still aren't using RSS yet. Not that many really understand what it is either. At BeatBlogging.Org, we serve multiple audiences. One audience is for people like yourself who already know a lot of this stuff, but are looking for info on the latest study or who are looking for some info to improve what they're doing by groking what other innovative people are doing. But this isn't all of our content.

We also have an audience of journalists -- mostly at traditional outlets -- that don't use these tools. We're trying to sell them on why they should use these tools, because we believe they work and can make for better journalism. So while this post on RSS is somewhat basic, it's a starting point, because even after two years of doing this site, most journalists aren't regularly using RSS. That blows my mind. We'll be doing additional content on RSS this week, and I'd love to do an interview/Q&A session about how you use RSS.

We also have our screencast (almost a year old now) on <a href="http://beatblogging.org/2009/02/17/screencast-how-to-use-rss-and-google-reader-for-journalism/" rel="nofollow">how to use RSS for reporting</a>.

It is a delicate balance at BeatBlogging.Org. We want to help people who are already using these tools and beatblogging to get better, but we also want to help journalists make the jump to using these tools. Thus some of our content may appear basic to some, while other content may appear too advanced for some.

Would love to have your thoughts about email alerts like Google Alerts.
Are you using it?

I've developed a Google Alerts for Twitter Lists so that you can track keywords whenever someone in any given list tweets with the keyword.
Check http://listimonkey.com

Would you be interested in having same kind of service but based on any RSS or OPML? Would you use it?
Thank you so much for your feedback!
